Worldwide Smartphone Forecast, 2023–2027

This IDC study presents the updated five-year forecast for smartphone shipments worldwide by operating system. The worldwide smartphone market will reach 1.19 billion units shipped in 2023, down 1.1% from the 1.21 billion units shipped in 2022. From there, shipments will hit 1.37 billion units in 2027, the final year of our forecast period, resulting in a CAGR of 2.6%."2023 is set to be a year of two halves, with the first half piggybacking off the downhill slide from the fourth quarter of 2022," said Anthony Scarsella, research director with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers. "Most regions will face double-digit declines in the first half of the year, then turn into positive territory in the third quarter, and then boost into double-digit growth in the last quarter. We expect the influx of premium flagships that typically launch in the third and fourth quarters will keep the full-year decline from being worse."
