Drones Have Momentum Across Asia/Pacific (Including Japan), Enabled by New Platforms

This IDC Market Perspective discusses the momentum behind drones or unmanned aerial vehicles in the Asia/Pacific region. Since the pandemic, the momentum for drones has picked up across Asia/Pacific (including Japan) (APJ), as regulators legalize drone usage and issue policy frameworks for recreational and enterprise usage. In most cases, usage has been allowed only for visual line-of-sight (VLOS) scenarios, with human control mandatory in most cases. However, there is an increasing push to enable beyond VLOS usage scenarios, which will need new regulatory frameworks and control mechanisms to allow autonomous unmanned aerial system (UAS) operations at scale to cater to a raft of new use cases. LTE and 5G will enable many of these use cases. Internet of Things platforms, for UAS traffic management (UTM) and connectivity to IT and cloud resources, are needed to enable drone applications and manage operations and regulatory compliance."Drones will become increasingly mainstream across the APJ region," says Shiv Putcha, adjunct research director, IDC Asia/Pacific. "They will be used for an increasing number of use cases for both leisure and commercial purposes. The wide variance of use cases will catalyze a market segment with a broad portfolio of drone categories, all of which will increasingly be connected to and managed by UTM platforms that will manage access, connectivity, and workflows back to corporate and cloud IT resources," he added.
