Key HighlightsPrior to COVID-19, Brazilian outbound tourism had experienced strong growth at a CAGR of 7.4% between 2016 and 2019 to reach 10.8 million international departures in 2019, more than double a decade earlier in 2009 (4.7 million). In 2020, international departures declined by 77.2% YoY to 2.4 million, before declining a further 34.7% YoY in 2021 to 1.6 million. Going forward, outbound travel is expected to recover to 2019 levels by 2024 with 11 million international departures, before reaching 11.3 million international departures by 2025, according to GlobalData forecasts (CAGR 2022-25: 15.6%). For Brazilian holidaymakers, leisure continues to be the leading motivator for international travel, accounting for nearly half (49.1%) of outbound travel purpose in 2021. In 2021, the top international destinations for Brazilian travelers were Portugal, Mexico, France, Italy and Spain. As per GlobalData’s Q3 2021 Consumer Survey, Brazilian travelers typically enjoy sun and beach holidays (73%), VFR (49%), cultural (27%), multi-stop trips (24%) and eco holidays (24%). Of the 222.1 million domestic tourists in Brazil in 2021, more than half (55%) were for leisure, representing 122.3 million leisure tourists, an 81.9% YoY increase from the previous year. Prior to COVID-19, domestic leisure tourists reached 151.5 million in 2019, following strong growth (CAGR 2016-19: 3.6%). Total outbound expenditure is projected to reach $26.4 billion by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 16.7% between 2022 and 2025, according to GlobalData forecasts. There is an opportunity for international shopping destinations to attract the Brazilian source market, due to high taxes levied on imported luxury goods.Defying the global travel trends, affordability and accessibility are not the primary factors influencing destinations for Brazilian travelers. According to GlobalData’s Q3 2021 Consumer Survey, just 49% of Brazilian respondents consider affordability as a factor when deciding where to go on holiday, compared to the global average of 58%. According to GlobalData’s Traveler Spending Patterns Database, Brazil was the seventh highest spending outbound market with an average expenditure of $2,177.4 per outbound tourist in 2021. This is forecasted to increase to $2,325.1 by 2025. 51% of Brazilian respondents consider accessibility as a factor influencing where to go on holiday, slightly below the global average of 52%.
