According to ConsTrack360, Smart materials in the country are expected to grow by 9.7% on an annual basis to reach US$346.2 million in 2023.
Medium to long term growth story of smart materials in Australia remains strong. Smart materials adoption is expected to grow steadily over the forecast period, recording a CAGR of 10.2% during 2023-2027. The smart materials in the country will increase from US$315.7 million in 2022 to reach US$510.9 million by 2027.
The Australian smart materials market is poised to record strong growth over the next five years. The growth of the domestic market will be driven by the rising innovation and adoption of smart construction materials in infrastructure development and other projects in Australia. Researchers are developing self-healing concrete to extend the lifetime of structures, which will also result in the savings of billions of dollars in annual maintenance costs.
In Australia, firms providing innovative building products are also seeking to expand their global presence. As a result, these firms are forging strategic alliances with global partners to expand their manufacturing and distribution networks. All of these factors combined are expected to aid the growth of the smart materials market from the short to medium-term perspective. Consequently, ConsTrack360 maintains a positive growth outlook for the Australian smart materials industry over the next five years.
Researchers are planning to repair cracked sewer pipes using sludge embedded in microcapsules in Australia
Growing innovation in the smart materials space is one of the major growth drivers for the industry's growth. In Australia, the trend is no different, as researchers are planning to automatically repair cracked sewer pipes using sludge embedded in microcapsules.
• A team of experts, led by the University of South Australia Professor Yan Zhunge, is trialing a solution for halting the growing levels of corrosion in aging concrete pipelines. Notably, the researchers are developing microcapsules that have a pH-sensitive shell and a core containing alum sludge and calcium hydroxide powder, which can act as a healing agent.
• The combination is expected to have high resistance to microbially induced corrosion (MIC). These microcapsules will be incorporated into the concrete during the final mixing step to provide protection against concrete breakage. The healing agents will be released when the pH value changes due to the accumulation of acid levels. The use of this technology is not only expected to increase the lifespan of concrete structures but will also result in savings of over A$1 billion for the economy. Furthermore, this approach, due to its ability to reuse the sludge, also promotes circular economy.
To achieve carbon neutrality, the construction sector is forced to transition to a circular economy in Australia. Consequently, more such innovative projects are expected to be undertaken over the next three to four years, which will subsequently aid the growth of the smart materials industry in Australia from the medium to long-term perspective.
Australian firms are eyeing growth opportunities in Asia and the United States market in 2023
There is a growing demand for innovative building products that can assist in the reduction of carbon emissions and help aid government organizations to realize their net-zero goals. Notably, Australian firms are seeking to capitalize on this growing opportunity by entering the Asian and the United States market.
• ClearVue, the Perth-based firm, is making major inroads into the smart materials segment with its building-integrated photovoltaic products. The innovative solution generates green electricity from the sun by integrating solar cells into skylights, building facades, and glass windows.
• In February 2022, ClearVue entered into a partnership with AZ Group and its subsidiary My Window in Cambodia. This partnership is an indication of the growing demand for the products offered by ClearVue in the Asia Pacific region. For ClearVue, the collaboration will allow the firm to explore glazing installation opportunities in the Southeast Asian market.
• Over the last 12 months, ClearVue has also increased its focus on the North American market. In July 2022, the firm secured a two-year deal with Advanced Impact Technologies Group. The partnership with a Florida-based firm focuses on the manufacturing and distribution of its product in the United States. Furthermore, ClearVue has also secured a manufacturing and distribution deal with Graboyes in Pennsylvania.
With North America and Asia Pacific emerging as the leading region for the solar photovoltaic glass market, ClearVue’s growing presence in these regions will keep assisting the growth of the smart materials space over the next three to four years.
