Surgical Apparel Manufacturing in the US
Surgical apparel manufacturers have been able to achieve some growth over the past five years, but several factors have tempered their expansion. While the aging baby boomer population has translated to an increasing number of surgeries, gradual demographic shifts aren't making up for the huge challenge that is import competition. Overseas manufacturers are able to leverage cheaper labor to undercut domestic companies and currently make up nearly half of the US market for surgical apparel. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to an unprecedented spike in demand for surgical equipment, but most of this skyrocketing demand was captured by foreign competitors in China and Mexico. Still, strong government support for manufacturers and consumers helped sustain the industry. Overall, industry-wide revenue has grown at an estimated CAGR of 0.9% to $1.1 billion over the five years to 2023, including an estimated 1.1% increase in 2023 alone.
This industry manufactures sterile surgical apparel such as surgical gowns, drapes, shoe covers and face masks. Surgical apparel is used to reduce the transfer of bacteria from surgical staff to the patient, while also protecting the staff from blood, urine, saline or other chemicals and bodily fluids during surgical procedures. This industry does not include apparel worn underneath protective gear, nor items sold for veterinary or laboratory use.
This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
